Keepin it real in plastic surgery

Presciption Drugs and Plastic Surgery

Following the death of Michael Jackson prescription drug use has been linked to plastic surgery. His Dermatologist admitted to prescribing the pain killer Demerol to Michael.  First lets be clear, his Dermatologist is not a board certified Plastic Surgeon so it is important to remember that he is a Dermatologist. Basically, he is trained in diseases of the skin. It is disturbing to know that he was prescribing a powerful narcotic for any procedure or care he could provide within the scope of his practice.Obviously there is more to this story.

Prescription drug abuse in plastic surgery can become a problem.  The nature of most plastic surgery procedures only expect to experience pain over a three to four week time period. Most plastic surgeons will not write narcotics after this time period. The bigger issue is the number of patients that come to them with a pre-existing pain killer tolerance.  It is imperative that the patient is honest with the surgeon so that medications can be prescribed according to what is already being consumed by the patient. If the patient does not disclose the pain medications, sleeping medications etc. that they are already taking the introduction of new medications could lead to a tragic situation. If you are considering plastic surgery remember to share every medication that you are taking with your surgeon. Be certain to follow the surgeons instructions concerning which medications you need to stop. It is important, and should never be taken lightly.
